Meet Our Chef

“Josia (Josh) Conradie was born in Montagu. After national service I went to study at Silwood Kitchen. I was privileged enough to work under French chef Bernard Lion. My journey took me to Franchhoek and Stellenbosch where I worked at well-known restaurants and wine farms. I then went on an Africa adventure, working in Zambia and Malawi at Safari lodges. This is where I met my beautiful French wife, Christelle and together we started our journey in Africa, Vietnam and back to Africa. In 2019 we decided to settle in South Africa, Swellendam. Christelle’s Bistro is our 3rd restaurant after surviving the devastating effects of Covid. My cuisine at Christelle’s Bistro is “South African food with a French flair”. “I believe in buying local and supporting as many local businesses as possible. It is challenging sometimes, because Swellendam is not a very big town, so some of our produce we need to get from the city. My wish is that you will have a great experience and just enjoy our delicious cuisine and relaxing atmosphere. 

Meet our Hostess

“I was born and grew up in a small village in the North of France. After school I went to England and worked there for 10 years, mainly in hospitality. I left England to work in Zambia at a safari lodge, that is where I met Josh.
We have been working together in Africa and Vietnam, before we decided to come to Swellendam.  Christelle’s bistro is a dream we had and made it a reality.
